After a stupendous hard court season, Rublev came to the clay court swing on the tour with high hopes. And the start was great too. He reached the finals of Monte Carlo only to be undone by a hungry Stefanos Tsitsipas. In Barcelona he lost to Jannik Sinner in the Quarters and in Madrid was beaten by the tall American John Isner.

Rublev has started his campaign in Rome well. In his first match he overcame a stubborn opponent in German Jan-Lennard Struff. And in the second he beat a dangerous Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 6-4. In the Quarters he will face Lorenzo Sonego.

The twenty-year old Italian started the clay court leg of the year by winning the trophy at Sardegna. In Monte Carlo he lost to Zverev in the round of thirty-two. In Rome so far the Italian has rightfully looked at Home. After taking down Gaël Monfils and Gianluca Mager in the first two rounds, he overcame the fourth seed Dominic Thiem in the round of sixteen, in three sets, 6-4 6-7 7-6.
