The Austrian comes into this match after a stellar season on the clay ahead of the 2021 French Open. Ruud made three consecutive semifinals on the European clay court by in Monte Carlo, Munich and Madrid. Later, he also ended up winning the title in Geneva by beating Wimbledon semifinalist, Denis Shapovalov. The top-seed has already beaten big names like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Diego Schwartzman and Fabio Fognini on the dirt this season, owing to which he has a 17-5 win-loss record. Given his impressive clay court run this year, he is the billed as the favourite to win the title in Bastad this week.

On the other hand, Rune comes into this match having beaten Radu Albot in round one. Although the Danish player has been a qualifier, he has played 53 matches on the dirt in 2021 so far. Therefore, one would expect him to find comfort going ahead. That said, he is yet to beat a top player on clay this year and the task is only going to get more tougher in round two.

Although Ruud is making the switch from grass to clay, one would imagine that he will find his groove quickly considering his movement and comfott on the surface. Moreover, he has also met the Danish player before in the season and repeating his success over him once again shouldn’t be a big task for the top seed.
