Sabalenka comes into this tournament after battling covid-19. She is yet to play a competitive match after losing in the semifinals of the 2021 US Open to Leylah Fernandez. That said, the Belarusian player has enjoyed a pretty fruitful season on the tour, owing to which she has now moved to No. 2 in the WTA rankings.

Sabalenka might have won only one title for the year thus far, but the 23-year-old has made plenty of quarterfinal and semifinal appearances in 2021. As far results on the hard courts go, Sabalenka has won 23 matches on the surface as compared to nine defeats. She is the No.2 seed this week in Moscow and is one of the top contenders to win the title, before heading to the WTA Finals in Mexico.

On the other hand, Tomljanovic will come into this contest after beating Liudmila Samsova in straight sets. Although the Australian did manage to reach the fourth round of the 2021 Indian Wells last week, it hasn’t been a very productive time for the 28-year-old on the hard courts this year.

Tomljanovic has lost more matches on the hard surfaces in 2021, as compared to her victories. While she has beaten some quality players over the past few months, it is tough to see her doing any damage this week in the Russian capital.

However, the Belarusian has momentum and experience on her side and will be keen on getting into the groove at the earliest. If the No.2 seed can find her range with serve and heavy shots from the baseline, then she should be able to book a spot in the next round.
