Jannik Sinner vs Mackenzie McDonald: Preview
Jannik Sinner has made a strong comeback on the tour and is now a step closer from another ATP title. The 19-year old Italian was in great form on the Hardcourts before the Clay and Grass season began where he struggled poorly. He becomes 1st Italian in 52-year tournament history to reach the finals in Washington and will look to become the youngest winner since Juan Martin del Potro won in 2008 at age 19.
He has however found his groove again and will now play for the 3rd title of his career at the Washington Open. The teen is yet to drop a set this week in the US capital and looks in great form having played only 3 tiebreakers. He was up against local lad Jenson Brooksby in the semi-finals and went on to defeat him 7-6(2), 6-1 to reach his 3rd final of the season.
Mackenzie McDonald continues his dream run as he reaches the first final of his career on the ATP tour. The 26-year old has had a great run and not many expected him to make it to the finals as he was set to begin against the defending champion Nick Kyrgios. Mackenzie has however shown some great skill level to move into the finals.
The American was up against Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the semi-finals and went on to defeat him 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in a thrilling 2 hour 45 minutes encounter on the Center Court. This was the only instance where Mackenzie dropped a set having won all of his previous matches in straight-sets.
Jannik Sinner vs Mackenzie McDonald: Head to Head
This will be the first ATP tour meeting between the duo, hence the head-to-head stands at 0-0.
Jannik Sinner vs Mackenzie McDonald: Prediction
Mackenzie will take the court with a career Hardcourt record of 145-95 and is 12-7 on the surface for the season which includes his Challenger tournaments as well where he plays majorly. He is 37-17 for the season across all surfaces. Sinner on the other hand comes into the tie with a 43-24 career Hardcourt record and a 16-4 season record on the surface while his season record is 28-14 for all surfaces.
While both the players have shown great character and exceptional skill in reaching the finals, it becomes difficult to predict an outright winner. However, given Sinner’s great record on Hardcourts this year and keeping in mind his finals run at the 2021 Miami Open, Sinner looks the favourite for this clash and take the trophy home.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in 3-sets
