Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez made deadlines two weeks back at the US Open by reaching the US Open final despite all odds stacked up against her. As a result, she jumped into the top 30 of the world and became an overnight sensation.
To put light on her performance, she beat defending champion Naomi Osaka, World No.5 Elina Svitolina, former World No.1 Angelique Kerber and World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka en route the final. During her semifinal against Sabalenka, Brooklyn Nets Coach Steve Nash was present in her box.
Latest, in an interview, he said that he’s been in contact with the Canadian teenager and said that he will always he present for her whenever she needs. “I’ve been in contact with Leylah and her family, wonderful family, obviously doing a lot of things right,” Nash said.
“For her to be so tough but at the same time so poised and skilled at a young age, so I’m here to help if they need me but they’ve just been grateful that I was there to support.”

Addressing Nash in her post match interview after the US Open semifinal against Aryna Sabalenka, Leylah revealed what a huge inspiration he’s been to her growing up.
“It’s a huge inspiration, I remember my dad used him as an example one time for a whole month, telling us that we gotta fight, we gotta work hard just like Steve Nash,” Fernandez said. “So it’s an honor to have you here watching me and cheering for me.”
At the end, Leylah even hoped to have a tennis match with Nash soon. “And hopefully, we can have a tennis match soon!” she concluded.
