World No.6 Rafael Nadal moves into the final of the Australian Open 2022 after a convincing 6-3,6-2,3-6,6-3 win over Italian Matteo Berrettini. The Spaniard would be hoping to win this title to win his 21st Grand Slam and move ahead of fierce rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to become the player with the most history majors.

The final, to take place at the Rod Laver Arena against World No.2 Daniil Medvedev, will provide a perfect opportunity for Nadal to stamp his authority as the single greatest player of all-time ahead of his ‘Big 3’ rivals.

Wilander sure Djokovic and Federer would be watching the final keenly

While speaking on Eurosport and analyzing the day’s play on Friday, expert Mats Wilander said that both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer would be keenly keeping an eye on Sunday’s problem. The duo would be understandably anxious as the much-awaited event of who among the three is the first to reach their 21st Grand Slam title is being led by Rafael Nadal. “Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are for sure following these finals very closely,” Wilander said.

Wilander, a former World No.1 and a former Australian Open champion himself, then went on to justify his claims. Firstly, he said that the duo would surely watch the game due to their love for the sport and that it is set to be an entertaining contest.

He said: “First of all, they are lovers of tennis. I think they will most probably watch it because it’s fun and [they’ll think]: ‘Ah, yeah, that’s what Rafa used to do against me’ or ‘Look at this Daniil Medvedev, is he better than we ever were?”

Secondly, Wilander said that the duo would watch the match as they always want to learn from top players around them. Based on what moves and masterstrokes Nadal and Medvedev play out against each other, both Djokovic and Federer would take note to improve further when they return.

“Then I think there’s the tactical tennis pro that’s still out there [thinking]: ‘What can I learn from what Medvedev does to Nadal, or Nadal does to Medvedev?’ So I’m sure Federer and Djokovic are both watching.”

With the race for the first to 21 Grand Slams now heating up and being one of the most awaited events of the year, it is sure that Wilander’s claim would be proved right on Sunday.
