Elina Svitolina who will be represented Ukraine in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics turned pro in 2010. She reached her career high ranking of World number 3 in September 2017 and again in September 2019. She earned her best ever grand slam finish in the singles event when she reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and US Open in 2019. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Svitolina scored her first win over defending champion and then world number 1, Serena Williams in the third round in straight sets. The Ukrainian eventually lost in the quarter finals.

Svitolina has not had the best record at Grand Slams this year after being knocked out in the fourth round at the Australian Open, the third round at the French Open and second round at Wimbledon, where she played last before flying to Tokyo. Like most of the other players, she last played on hard court at the Miami Open where she lost in the semi final against Ashleigh Barty. She has a win-loss record of 23-13 this year to date and 410-213 throughout her career.

Laura Siegemund who turned pro in 2006 has won two singles and six doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She reached a career high ranking of world number 27 in 2016 and her best grand slam finish has been at the French Open in 2020 when she reached the quarterfinals.

Siegemund represented Germany in the 2016 Rio Olympics and also reached the quarter finals in the singles event.

At Wimbledon, she lost in the first round in straight sets against Ekaterina Alexandrova. At the Miami Open, she reached the Round of 64 and then gave a walkover to number 14 seed, Victoria Azarenka. She has not had one of the best years with a win-loss record of 14-13 and overall, in her career, a record of 505-335.
