There is a buzz around Swiatek, it’s as if people are finally waking up to the fact that she is the ‘real’ deal. While we are looking at young champions like Naomi Osaka unable to deal with stardom, Swiatek looks like someone who doesn’t mind being famous or the odd bit of criticism thrown at her. Swiatek came into the French Open high on confidence and form. She had won the Italian Open and done so by dropping just one set in the entire tournament. She beat players like Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina en route to the Final. In the Final she dominated Karolina Pliskova to win the match in straight sets, 6-0 6-0. In the first round of the Open she faced her best friend on tour Kaja Juvan. In the first set against Juvan, Swiatek was unforgiving as she won it 6-0. In the second set Juvan did well with her defensive game and fought hard. In the end, Swiatek won the match 6-0 7-5.
In the second round she will face Rebecca Peterson. The twenty-five year old Peterson has won two Titles on the tour already. On clay this year she reached the Quarter finals of the Serbia Open where she was beaten by Paula Badosa. The last tournament she participated in was Strasbourg. There she was ousted in the first round by Yulia Putintseva. In the first round of the French Open she defeated American Shelby Rogers in three sets, 6-7 7-6 6-2.
