Iga Swiatek vs Maria Sakkari: Preview

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek is on the path to defend her title and so far, she couldn’t have done a better job. The eighth seed is yet to drip a set in the tournament and is currently riding on a 22-set winning streak at Roland Garros. After convincing victories over Kaja Juvan, Rebecca Peterson and Anett Kontaveit, Swiatek had to face in form Marta Kostyuk.

Although she defeated Kostyuk in straight sets 6-3,6-4, she was pushed to the very limit. The Ukrainian managed to find loopholes in Swiatek’s oncourt movement that her future opponents will surely exploit.

As for her opponent, Maria Sakkari, she has been having a dream her. She will be appearing in her first grand slam quarterfinal on Wednesday. The 17th seed Greek knocked out 4th seed and last year’s runner-up Sofia Kenin in the Round of 16 in straight sets 6-1,6-3 to book a place in the last 8.

Iga Swiatek vs Maria Sakkari: Prediction

On paper, Swiatek will go in as the favorite to win the match, given her ranking and tournament record. To back that up, her performance over the week has been amazing too. But Sakkari’s powerful baseline gameplay will definitely be a threat to her. The 17th seed is hitting the ball clean and would surely trouble the defending champion. But the Parisian Clay bodes well with Swiatek and she would very well be through to the semifinals.

Prediction: Swiatek to win in three sets.
