The young 23-year-old American, Taylor Fritz who is currently ranked number 40 in the world lost in the opening round of the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada. He was up against qualifier and world number 85, James Duckworth from Australia. Duckworth got the better of Fritz by breaking his serve three times, to seal the victory, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Fritz was the favourite to take the win in this match however, during the match, the American suffered from a heart complication. Fritz later went on to social media to reveal that everything is okay. In a separate tweet, Fritz posted a video of a screen recording of his message requests on Instagram. What can be seen in the video is numerous death threats with people telling Fritz to return back the money they paid for the match and some even threatening the American to retire from professional tennis.

“Hey guys…I’m okay. Probably one of the weirdest things I have ever experienced…heart was going absolutely crazy for no reason, I only continued cause it was so odd I thought it would maybe go away and I really hate quitting even if it was probably the smart thing to do” said Fritz on his social media.

“And to all the gamblers giving me the typical death threats for not pulling out, I’m really not concerned about your degenerate gambling addictions while I’m playing a match” he added with the video he posted.

This is not the first time Fritz has encountered physical issues on court. Earlier this year in June, at the French Open in Paris, Fritz injured his right knee in his second-round match.

During the second-round match at Roland Garros against Dominik Koepfer, Fritz felt a pop in his right knee during the match point. He was unable to walk off the court and was thus, taken in a wheelchair.

“I tried to stand up. I couldn’t stand. I looked at my team and I said, ‘Guys I could be done for a long time.’ Because I have never had anything that felt like that. I heard it pop, you know? I heard it go. So obviously I was really down, expecting something bad from the MRI’s,” said Fritz at Wimbledon.

Fritz went into surgery as soon as he reached back home in California. He was told to expect a four to six-week recovery time frame however, Fritz was motivated to play at Wimbledon and was seen in London playing at a Grand Slam just 3 weeks after knee surgery, proving once again that the young player does not like to quit.

“’m positive this is the quickest anyone has ever returned to, like actual professional competition from this surgery – definitely any sport that requires direction changes. Maybe someone has done it in golf. But this is definitely the fastest someone has come back from this,” he added.
