“That’s crazy” Nick Kyrgios left stunned by Alexander Bublik’s audacious trick shot at the Miami Open

Nick Kyrgios is no stranger to trick shots. The Australian has got all of them under his sleeve, from audacious tweeners to out-of-the-blue underarm serves. He might sometimes not play up to his potential, but Kyrgios is thoroughly one of the most entertaining players on tour. But this time, the 26-year-old played the role of a spectator when Alexander Bublik pulled off one of the most audacious shots you’ve seen in recent times during his second-round exit at the 2022 Miami Open.

During his second-round clash against Casper Ruud, Bublik was down 0-4 in the second set, but the Kazakh was in high spirits and was fighting for every point. He was 40-0 up and was just one point away from finally registering a game on board. Ruud launched a forehand high up in the air and Bublik, instead of opting to smash it, pulled off an unorthodox shot and hit the ball with his racquet handle. Ruud returned it but this time Bublik took the easy route to win the point with an overhead smash and clinch the game. The audacious shot was met with thunderous applause from the crowd and even trick shot specialist Nick Kyrgios was impressed by it.

“That’s crazy,” Kyrgios commented on a clip of the shot.

There is never a damp moment with Nick Kyrgios on the court. The Australian serve game at the Miami Open has been in a class of its own. He lost only eight points on his serve en route to a straight-set demolition of Fabio Fognini with the scoreline 6-2, 6-4 in the third round.

Kyrgios was serving at 40-0 while trailing 2-3 in the second set when a fan yelled out for an underarm serve. Without a second thought, he delivered it, but it hit the net. Fognini said to ‘do it again,’ but Kyrgios did a normal serve to wrap up the game.

Kyrgios has played only 3 tournaments this year, but he has been clinical in all of them. He reached the second round of the Australian Open, where he put up a tough fight against eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev. Then at the Indian Wells, the Australian lost to Rafael Nadal in a 3-set thriller in the semis.

Kyrgios’s campaign in Miami so far has been promising as well. The 2022 Australian Open Doubles champion breezed through his first three matches without dropping a set, one of which was a dominant win over 5th seed Andrey Rublev. In the fourth round, Kyrgios will take on 9th seed Jannik Sinner, who saved 5 match points to pull off a stunning comeback win over Pablo Carreno Busta in his earlier match.
