Latest ATP rankings face a MASSIVE change as Novak Djokovic reclaims his position as World No.1

Despite all of the speculations and controversy, the ATP World No. 1 ranking has returned to its previous owner, Novak Djokovic, a 20-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic will resume his 361-week reign as World No. 1 now that he has regained the ranking.

This year, the 20-time Major champion has only competed in one tournament due to visa limitations that prevented him from visiting certain countries without being vaccinated. However, because of Daniil Medvedev’s early BNP Paribas Open loss, he was able to reclaim his top spot.

After being deported from Australia on the eve of the season-opening Grand Slam and being unable to travel to the United States as an unvaccinated individual, Novak Djokovic has only been able to compete in the Dubai Tennis Championships so far this season. Due to the lack of competition, he lost important ranking points and lost his world No.1 spot to Daniil Medvedev earlier this month after losing in the quarterfinals in Dubai. Nevertheless, Daniil Medvedev’s time at the top was brief, as the 26-year-old gave the No. 1 ranking back to the Serb on Monday after falling to Gael Monfils in the third round of Indian Wells.

Aside from that, the ATP ranking system has undergone various adjustments. Rafael Nadal, a 21-time grand slam champion, has ascended the rankings to overtake Alexander Zverev as the new World No. 3. Following that, Carlos Alcaraz was awarded the 16th Rank, which is a career-high, and Taylor Fritz will be given the 13th Rank if he defeats Rafael Nadal in the final of the Indian Wells 2022.

The 34-year-old had already declared his participation in Monte Carlo following the rule change and has now been confirmed for the Serbia Open, which will be hosted in his own Novak Tennis Centre in Belgrade later in the clay-court season. The tournament starts the week following Monte Carlo, on April 18.

Last year, when the event returned to Serbia, the world No. 1 was defeated in the semi-final by Aslan Karatsev, with the 28-year-old going on to lose the final to Matteo Berrettini, who is yet to be confirmed to defend his title. Last year, in the week leading up to the French Open, a second edition of the event, termed “Belgrade 2,” was staged and won by Novak Djokovic, who went on to win his second Roland Garros title two weeks later.
