“There was a deep sense of sadness”- Naomi Osaka reveals her regrets over disappointing Olympics performance

Naomi Osaka recently shared a post reflecting her performance at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and weighed in her thoughts about it. Osaka lit the Olympic cauldron during the opening in Tokyo and there were high hopes on the 4-time Grand Slam champion that she would be the first Japanese tennis player to win a Gold Medal at the Olympics.

However, her dreams of winning a home Olympic Gold were crushed when she was knocked out in the third round after losing to Marketa Vondrusova in straight sets. Playing her 1st Olympics game at home soil was huge pressure for Osaka, who was already struggling with mental health issues prior to the Summer Games. It was also the Japanese star’s first tournament since the French Open, where she withdrew from the tournament citing mental health concerns.

Osaka took to Instagram to recall her performance at the Olympics. She said she regretted not enjoying the whole Olympic experience despite the fact that it was held in her home country. She also said she hoped this will serve as a lesson for her to ensure she finds joy in her future experiences, regardless of the result.

After skipping the better half of last year, Osaka returned from her hiatus and began her 2022 season with a semi-final finish at the Melbourne Summer Set 1. At the Australian Open, her title defense ended in the third round itself, when she faced a shocking loss to Amanda Anisimova.

Osaka is now set to return to action at the Indian Wells, which takes place in March. She returns to the place where she won her 1st WTA title and will be looking to find her rhythm and return to her title-winning ways at the WTA 1000 tournament, as she begins her ascent up the rankings.
