Venus and Serena Williams’ nephew Alphonse dies by suicide, after battling rare disease

Serena Williams‘ estranged nephew, Alphonse Williams, passed away from suicide, aged just 21.

Alphonse is the youngest son of Serena’s half-sister, Sabrina Williams. She is the daughter of Betty Johnson, Richard Williams’ first wife. Sabrina said her son took this extreme step after he was diagnosed with Peyronie’s disease. Sabrina also revealed that this wasn’t Alphnonse’s first suicide attempt. He also tried to take his own life two-and-half years ago after he received his diagnosis.

“When my son attempted [to end] his life two and a half years ago, I asked God, save his life and give me a little bit more time, please.  And God answered my prayers. He did. He gave me two and a half years more than I expected. I knew he was on loan and God called in that loan. He was crying last Monday, hysterical crying. The week before, the doctor confirmed what he already knew, that he had Peyronie’s, ” Sabrina said in an interview with THe Sun.

She also added that Alphonse was seeking the help of a counselor to help him battle through depression and she said he died through an overdose of an unknown medicine.

He had started back at high school, he was going into his fourth semester of computer engineering and was regularly seeing a counselor. It’s going to take six to eight weeks for the coroner to find out what he bought. We know he’s taken some strong medicines which would have made him fall asleep, he would have gone into respiratory distress, but wouldn’t have known. He just never woke up,” she said.

Sabrina also stresses the importance of mental health and said her son was battling depression and if he would’ve received proper medical care, this tragedy wouldn’t have occurred. She also said that Alphonse couldn’t cope with the news of the diagnosis.

“I read online for hours. One of the top symptoms is depression. I’m not denying that he died with mental health problems, but I truly believe that if my son got some help, somebody was able to talk to him, I think he would still be here. He had no idea that this thing was making him more depressed,” Sabrina said about her som’s battle with depression.

Sabrina then denied having any relations or connections to the Serena Williams‘ family. Richard Williams was initially married to Betty Johnson but walked out in them when Sabrina was eight. Following that he was married to Serena and Venus‘ mother, Oracene Price. Alphonse never met his grandfather or any of Serena’s family, because of a family rift. She then said her estranged father’s family is ‘dead to her.’

The rest of the family are now dead to me,” Sabrina said.
