Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic has become not only the brand name for tennis but also for sports in general throughout the world. He is a 20 time Grand Slam champion and holds the record for spending a jaw-dropping 350 weeks as rank no.1 on the ATP singles chart, beating the previous record-holder Rafael Nadal who had spent 310 weeks as the no.1 ranked player.
The Serbian has raised the expectations of viewers after his performance in the 2021 season where he won 3 out of the 4 major titles and reached the final of the US Open 2021 in an attempt to grab his prestigious 21st Grand Slam title to become the player with the most Grand Slam titles in the world, but was stopped by Daniil Medvedev, who defeated Nole in straight sets.
As the currently no.1 player in the world, Djokovic has many eyes on him regarding the upcoming season but his upcoming appearance at the 2021 Australian Open has recently been made unsure and clouded under controversy.
Will Novak Djokovic be allowed to play in the Australian Open 2022?
Novak Djokovic‘s participation in the Australian Open continues to be shrouded in mystery as world no.1 has repeatedly refused to reveal his vaccination status. Tennis Australia Chief, Craig Tiley, recently confirmed that unvaccinated players would not be allowed to participate in the tournament.
“We’ll see. We’ll have to wait and see,” Novak Djokovic said. “I haven’t been talking to them, to be honest. I was just waiting to hear what the news is going to be. Now that I know, we’ll just have to wait and see.” said Djokovic when asked about his vaccination status.
However, reports have stated that that the Serb has ground to apply for a medical exemption to the compulsory vaccines that would allow him to skip the quarantine and play for the title he won a record 9th time in 2021. Djokovic reportedly has the backing of Tennis Australia and is presumed that his exemption would be allowed, but no one knows for sure, since he has kept shut about his status.
In a statement on the official Australian Open Website, Novak Djokovic is named as the drawcard player of the event alongside Aussie superstar Ash Barty. While Djokovic has been named on the official entry list for the event – it doesn’t necessarily mean authorities will allow him to attend Melbourne Park.
