“Yes Mike, we give a f***”- Martina Navratilova lashes out at Mike Pompeo over disgraceful remarks on Ukraine

Mike Pompeo and Martina Navratilova

Martina Navratilova lashed out at former US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo for showing a lack of concern to the Ukrainians amidst their conflict with Russia.

Navratilova was visibly furious after Pompeo’s past comments against Ukraine resurfaced and how the Republicans gave a side-eye to the wrongdoings of the Russian regime and instead supported them.

Yes Mike, we give a f***. And so should you!!!” she posted.

Pompeo, who was in the cabinet during Donald Trump’s reign, has been under increased scrutiny over his comments on Russia and Ukraine. Pompeo had earlier praised Vladimir Putin for being a KGF agent and for knowing when to flex his power. He has now spoken out against the Russian war, albeit his criticism was politically motivated as it was directed at Joe Biden and there has been no mention of Putin. In 2020, when Pompeo was still serving as the Secretary, he dismissed Ukraine as insignificant in the paradigm of American Politics. He reportedly pulled an NPR reporter aside and was furious at her for asking questions about Ukraine and said “Do you think Americans care about Ukraine?”. These comments have not gone unnoticed and he is now facing ire from the public.

Navratilova has been quite vocal about her support for Ukraine. The former World No.1 earlier expressed her concern for Ukrainian players who are currently on tour and away from their families in their homeland. She has voiced her opinion and is often seen sharing pro-Ukraine posts on her social media. She has been quite vocal about her criticism of Vladimir Putin as well, the main instigator of the war.

However, Navratilova defended Russian athletes and said they are not obliged to give a clear stance on the situation, but praised the decision to suspend their federations and said making them compete under a neutral flag was the right choice. She added it is hard to speak out against Russia for the players as it is a totalitarian regime and they might be putting their families at risk by doing so.

“I don’t think you should ask them to be more vocal about it, because they have a family to consider, and now, you know, they can get 15 years in prison for talking about the war. Of course, Ukrainians are the victims here, but the athletes of Belarus or Russia would be the victims on the other end if you don’t let them play,” Navratilova said in an earlier interview with New York Times.
