Rafael Nadal created history when he won the French Open 2020. The King of Clay tied with Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slams when he lifted his 13th Roland Garros title. Nadal defeated long-time rival Novak Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in the finals of the tournament this year.
The Spaniard displayed a seemingly unattainable form and recovered very well after his loss in the Italian Open 2020. To everyone’s surprise, Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman had defeated Nadal 6-2, 7-5 and delivered an upset in the quarter-finals.
Nadal’s uncle and former coach Toni Nadal was recently asked about who he thinks the GOAT(Greatest of all time) is and his answer was not Rafa. He decided to pick Rafa’s other rival instead, Roger Federer. Toni praised his nephew firsthand but proceeded to choose Federer as the best.
Toni Nadal chooses Roger Federer over Rafael Nadal
In an interview with Radio Marca, the 59-year-old initially reflected on his nephew’s historic victory at the French Open 2020. He said, “I am very happy to see my nephew win again. Rafa played an extraordinary game yesterday against a great rival, it is a very adverse situation.”
Nadal now stands with Roger Federer at the front of the lineup. The duo are the only male players to have earned 20 Grand Slam titles in the singles category in their career. Despite being on par with the Swiss Maestro now, Toni still says that Roger is better because he has more titles.
He continued, “I say that the best is Roger Federer because he has more titles in tournaments, more victories, more weeks of number one and everything counts.”
The battle amongst the ‘Big 3’ and the spectacle they produce continues to remain extraordinary. By the looks of it, all of them are worthy of the title, for they have elevated this sport in its entirety.
