“The future GOAT”- Patrick Mahomes breaks another record, Chiefs quarterback rewrites history against the Steelers
Patrick Mahomes
The Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in their 2021 AFC wild-card matchup. It was a game in which the Chiefs star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes took over. Once again Mahomes has repaid his team’s faith in him by delivering a brilliant playoff win.
Mahomes came into the game off the back of 3 solid outings to close the regular season. While he didn’t cross 300 yards in any of the games he did have multiple touchdowns and no interceptions in all of them. Having no interceptions was huge given the 7 game stretch he had at the start of the season where he had at least 1 interception in all of them. While he did throw 1 interception against the Steelers, it’s his other numbers that have etched him into the record books once again.
Patrick Mahomes’ record setting performance
Patrick Mahomes is now the only player to ever throw for 400 yards and 5 touchdowns in the same game 4 times and the only quarterback to ever do it in the playoffs. His 405 yards and 5 touchdowns take him above 3 legendary quarterbacks namely, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, and Joe Montana as the sole leader in the category. Doing it in a playoff game too makes the stat even more unbelievable than it already is.
There are people who make the argument that Mahomes is already the GOAT and while that is certainly premature as of now, the level he’s been playing at throughout his career certainly is comparable to some of those greats mentioned earlier. The table below is all 3 QBs career stats after 63 starts(number of starts Mahomes has)
QB | Passing Yards | Touchdowns | Interceptions |
Patrick Mahomes | 18991 | 151 | 37 |
Peyton Manning | 16227 | 109 | 80 |
Dan Marino | 18019 | 159 | 72 |
