“They fear that he will be the best in history,” Former player backs Djokovic to break Nadal and Federer’s record
Former Serbian and Yugoslavian tennis star, Radmilo Amenulic has stepped out to defend Novak Djokovic over the unjust criticism the Serbian has received for his default at the US Open 2020. In this process, he took a few digs at Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer and claimed that Djokovic will end up with more Grandslam titles than the pair.
The 80 year old, Amenulic who was the captain of the Yugoslav Davis Cup team and himself a player a few decades ago, hit out at the criticism received by Novak Djokovic for his default at the US Open 2020 in an interview to Alo Website. He said that there were a few instances in the past where the big players have been let off without any punishment and also defended Djokovic saying that he immediately rushed to the lines woman to check whether she was okay.
Amenulic said, “The one at the US Open is a scandal. I’ve looked at dozens of worse cases for which players haven’t even been warned, let alone punished. The big players are involved in that so that Roger Federer stays first so that Novak doesn’t accidentally overtake him. Sponsors are also involved. It is doubtful to me that none of Djokovic’s opponents reacted after the disqualification, no one commented. This is not collegial. Novak is a gentleman, he immediately admitted guilt in order to calm his passions. He would certainly sound the opposite. I have never heard him criticize Roger and Rafa in his statements, but they seem vicious
“I think he will come back stronger,” Amenulic on Novak Djokovic
Radmilo Amenulic refused to rule out Novak Djokovic and accept that he is finished. He believed that the Serbian always bounces back in spite of people trying to bring him down. He told the Alo Website, “I think he will come back stronger. They disturb him in various ways, they fear that he will be the best in history.”
Radmilo also backed Djokovic to surpass Nadal and Federer’s tally of 20 Grandslams each and become the greatest tennis player of all time. He hoped that the Australian Open 2021 would not get cancelled as Djokovic enters the tournament as the clear favourite, having won in Australia 8 times in the past.
Ending the interview, he also took a cheeky dig at Rafael Nadal by stating that the Serbian was way past his French Open loss and will bounce back stronger. He also claimed that Rafael Nadal was a clay court bully and could challenge Djokovic only at the Roland Garros.
