“They’re a first round exit unless switch things up” Kendrick Perkins slams Dallas Mavericks for CARELESSLY depending entirely on Luka Doncic

“They’re a first round exit unless switch things up” Kendrick Perkins slams Dallas Mavericks for CARELESSLY depending entirely on Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic and Kendrick Perkins

Luka Doncic has become an international sensation and has already been called by NBA pundits a potential one of the greatest ever in the future. Since his rookie year, Luka has been nothing less than magic for the Dallas Mavericks. The Slovenian is already in the discussion for MVP early in this 2022-23 season. The discussion around his workload is however an alarming issue for the Dallas Mavericks this season.

NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins was highly critical of Dallas Mavericks for relying too much on Luka Doncic. He pointed out that the Mavs gave up an important piece in Jalen Brunson and they are paying for it now. Speaking of Jalen Brunson Perkins also reminded that the player was an important piece for Dallas and he was taken lightly. He told ESPN, “we as fans and also in the media took Jalen Brunson for granted because he is still doing a hell of a job in Knicks uniform.

According to Perkins, “If you don’t have that Robin, if you don’t have that guy who is capable of putting up 40… then you are not gonna get far.” He added, “Dallas Mavericks are leaning too much on Luka just to pull out regular season wins.” Perkins said Luka has to drop high numbers just to win a game and that can prove too much for Doncic. Luka Doncic has been averaging 34.3 points per game in the season. He has also been dropping 8.1 dimes per game.

The Mavericks have been depending heavily on Doncic’s production so far into the season. Despite his out-of-world performance, there is no surety as to how far the Mavs are going into the season. The addition of Spencer Dinwiddie and Christian Wood has definitely deepened the roaster but both of those players have been among the primary choices for the offense for their coaches previously.

Can Luka and Mavericks go far in the season?

Although Luka Doncic’s game and numbers are similar to LeBron James’, comparing the two and relying on him as teams did on the King would be a huge mistake. His offense is similar to LeBron’s but his defense is nowhere near to James’. As lethal and dangerous as LeBron is on the offense, he is also known for guarding and locking up the best player on the opposite team which Luka can not do.

However to Mavs’ credit, compared to James’ teams in Cleveland and Los Angeles, Doncic has a better roster at his disposal. Christian Wood is averaging just below 16 points this season and Dinwiddie is averaging 18.5 points for the Mavericks. This trio is perhaps one of the top trios in the league.

The depth of the Dallas Mavericks becomes even more visible with Tim Hardway Jr. who is also averaging 11.7 points this season. The problem with Mavericks is their 2nd option is to run the offense from the guard position. When Luka is on the bench all Wood and Dinwiddie can create their own offense and score the ball but none of them can run the offense like Doncic. With Luka sitting on the bench the Mavericks’ offense takes a bit hit, which they have to solve as soon as possible, or else Kendrick Perkins might be right.
