Tokyo Olympics 2020: Galal Yafai wins first gold medal in boxing for Britain

Galal Yafai makes Great Britain’s dream of winning gold in boxing at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 come true.

Galal Yafai took on Carlo Paalam of the Philippines in the Kokugikan Arena at Tokyo Olympics. The flyweight boxer is 28 years of age and finally won gold for the country. Great Britain has been great this year at the Olympics especially in boxing. They have collectively won 5 medals in the sport of boxing which is the second-highest by any country. They have two silvers and two bronze but were lacking the icing on the cake but Galal has provided them that finish with a victory over Paalam.

Yafai won the gold medal bout via decision 4-1. Yafai looked amazing from the beginning of the fight as he knocked down the Philippine boxer in just 90 seconds. The first round was completely dominated by the British boxer. Both the fighters seemed to have mutual respect between them as you can see in the above picture, they share a wholesome moment. Yafai has also won the gold medal in the 2018 Common Wealth Games.

“I’m Olympics champion and I’m over the moon,” says Galal Yafai after the win

After his win, BBC got a chance to interview and get his first reaction from the gold medalist. “It’s absolutely something I’ve always wanted to do,” Yafai told BBC Sport. “I’m Olympic champion and I’m over the moon. I’ve worked hard – six years ago I took up boxing and thank God it worked out for me and shows if you work hard you can reap the rewards.”

“Everyone back in Britain and Birmingham, the support I’ve received has been ridiculous and amazing. I’m just overwhelmed and so grateful for everyone who has shown me, love.” Galal comes from a family of boxers and his brother was more than proud after he won the gold medal for the country. “Alhumdililah!!! My brother Olympic champion!!! I’m lost for words!! Olympic champion!!!! Olympic Champion!!!” he exclaimed on Twitter.
