Tokyo Olympics: Biggest Challengers in the Archery Mixed Team Event for Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das

The Archery mixed team event will be making its debut at the Tokyo Olympics this year. The mixed teams will comprise a team of 2, one man and one woman. There will be 128 archers (64 male and 64 female) who will be a part of this year’s mixed team event.

The Indian couple of Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das will be representing India at the Tokyo Olympics in the event. The Indian duo is looking very strong, individually as well as in a team.

They won a bronze at the 2019 Asian Archery Championships, and they have been unstoppable since. They won bronze again at the 2021 Guatemala World Cup and very recently, won a gold medal at the 2021 Stage 4 Paris World Cup inching out the strong Netherlands team.

South Korea will undoubtedly be the biggest competitor for Indians at the Tokyo Olympics. They claimed a clean sweep in Rio 2016 in the Archery event and will be looking to do the same this year. 

Although the team remains unannounced, Kim Woo Jin and Kang Chae Young seem like the prospects to represent South Korea. The duo won gold in the 2019 Stage 1 Archery World Cup in Medellin and another gold in the 2019 Archery World Cup Final. They have not competed in competition since, but will definitely give India a tough fight at the Olympics

2. Netherlands

The strong Netherland Team includes Gabriela Schloesser and Sjef van den Berg. The Netherland team is a force to be reckoned with since entering the mixed team event.

The duo won a bronze medal at the 2019 European Games and won a silver at the 2019 World Archery Championships. They recently won gold in the 2021 Stage 2 Archery World Cup in Lausanne. They will be looking to continue their winning streak at the Tokyo Olympics as well.

3. USA

The USA team will be another duo to watch out for since the USA has the second-highest medal tally in archery at the Olympics after the South Koreans. 

Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold will be representing the US at the Tokyo Olympics in the mixed team event. One of the USA’s strongest archers, Brady Ellison won a bronze at the Rio Olympics in the men’s individual archery event. 

The duo won gold at the 2019 Pan American Games held in Lima and a silver at the 2019 Stage 1 Archery World Cup held in Medellin. The team will definitely be looking to finish on the podium this year in the mixed team event.

4. Mexico

The Mexican duo at the Olympics will be Alejandra Valencia and Luis Alvarez. They won a bronze at the 2019 Pan American Games held in Lima. Alejandra Valencia is the 2019 Pan American Games gold medal winner in the women’s individual archery event and is a two-time Olympian.

The Mexicans have had a strong showing this year, winning 2 bronze medals at Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the 2021 Archery World Cup. The duo is a dark horse that India will have to look out for at the Tokyo Olympics this year.
