Mariya Lasitskene
ROC high jumper Mariya Lasitskene has been crowned the new women’s high jump Olympic champion after clearing an awe-striking height of 2.04m at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. High jump is one of the crowd attractions of track and field with jumpers arching and flying to towering heights sheerly with their body weight.
The women’s high jump was touted to be a fiery match after some jaw-breaking heights cleared in the recent seasons. And the event surely did not disappoint in that aspect remaining unnerving till the very last jump.
3-time world champion Lasitskene was unable to participate in the 2016 Rio Games after the ban on Russian track and field athletes. However, her performance of 2.00m at a domestic competition would have earned her a gold medal. Lasitskene overcome that gap with her thundering win on Saturday.
Initially she struggled to find her form having cleared 1.96m on the last attempt. She recovered after clearing 2.02m in her first attempt and finally taking the gold with her 2.04m second attempt clearance.
Tokyo Olympics: Mariya Lasitskene’s determined comeback
ROC high jumper Mariya Lasitskene took home the high jump gold with a 2.04m performance. Nicola McDermott of Australia clinched the silver medal with 2.02m clearance. Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine bagged the bronze medal with a 2.00m clearance.
The women’s high jump at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics was a close-cut match with McDermott leading the pack before Lasitskene made a determined comeback rising from the 8th position. This Olympic competition marked the first time since 2000 Sydney Games that a female high jumper has crossed the 2m barrier at the Olympics.
The calculations of the jumpers kept changing after shocking falls and surprising clearances. The fierce competition between the medallists made the results unpredictable till the very end with fans and coaches alike, on the edge of their seats.
