The former coach and uncle of Rafael Nadal, Toni Nadal revealed some interesting stories of his nephew’s upbringing. The former World No.1 is currently in recovery and training for the forthcoming clay season. Nadal suffered an early blow in the Australian Open due to an injury. As a result, he couldn’t participate in any other tournaments after the season’s first Grand Slam.

However, the latest news tells is Nadal is almost fit and running. The Spaniard even started training for the upcoming Monte Carlo in April. Due to his poor performances and lack of matches played this season, he dropped out of the top-10 in the ATP rankings for the first time in 18 years. Although it’s a big blow to him, he is known to comeback stronger.

His uncle, Toni Nadal recently spoke to Marca and said, “Yes, I was a tough guy but I see sport as surpassing oneself. What attracts me is to improve myself and I understood that success would come from personal development. I knew that with this I could improve Rafael’s character.”

On this occasion, he shared an anecdote and said, “I made it difficult for him, which helped him overcome the difficulties, even if it is unique to him. I never liked complaining, it doesn’t help you improve. One day Rafa wanted an Aston Marin which he really liked. His father said to him: ‘what are you going to do with an Aston Martin in Manacor? You already have a very nice Kia!’ “

In April 2005, at the age of 18, the 22-time Grand Slam champion made it into the Top 10 for the first time after winning the Barcelona Open. Since then, he has been at the top of the rankings as the master of clay courts. Regrettably, after an impressive 912-week streak, the longest of any player, Rafa recently lost his position and is currently ranked No. 13 in the world.

The 36-year-old tennis player lost 600 points due to his hip injury and missed the Miami Open, resulting in a further loss of crucial points. Nadal has been plagued by numerous injuries, leading to less participation and fewer points. However, he is determined to continue playing and extend his major title record, despite rumors of retirement.

As Nadal may not have much time left before he retires, he needs to perform well and make a strong comeback. Since the upcoming season is on clay court, which is his forte, Rafael Nadal will always be considered a favorite to win. However, players like Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev will give a tough fight to him. Nevertheless, it will be exciting to see him once again on clay.
