Endermen has a special feature that is not shared with any other mobs in the game. Upon getting attacked or taking 1 health damage from any sources, the Enderman will teleport away and emit a cloud of purple particles.

The Players need Ender Pearls to craft Eye of the Ender and travel to the End dimension. The Ender pearl can only be dropped by the Minecraft Enderman and is exclusive to it only!

Therefore, to reach the end boss, the Ender Dragon, players need to kill Endermen and get the pearls.

However, why they do this is not known as of yet.

Defeating an Enderman when they are already charging towards you might be a scary battle. Moreover, it is useless to harm them from a distance as ranged attacks have zero effect on them.

When attacked from a ranged, they will teleport leaving behind purple particle clouds and not take any damage. Therefore, the only way to beat them is getting up close and personal.
