In Short
  • Trick Williams revealed he had only 14 cents when WWE contacted him for a tryout.
  • He has since achieved significant success, including winning the WWE United States Championship.
  • Williams mentioned that rapper Lil Yachty expressed interest in training for a wrestling match.

Matrick Mondre Belton, popularly known as ‘Sweet Daddy Trick’ and Trick Williams, didn’t have a sweet life before WWE turned the tides for him. The professional wrestler, who’s now worth millions, once had just 15 cents in his pockets.

In an episode of Stephanie McMahon’sWhat’s Your Story,” Williams shared the financial struggles from his early days when he barely had any money after he paid his bills. After a short playing career as a South Carolina Gamecocks, Williams tried out for the Philadelphia Eagles in a rookie minicamp held in May 2017.

Though it didn’t work out for Williams with the Eagles, his grind took him to send a clip to Vince McMahon to attempt an entry in XFL, a now defunct league run by the ex-WWE supremo. It was all going to change for Williams when WWE mailed him back, with his sails finally in sync with the winds.

I was down to 14 cents when I paid off all my bills, and that’s when WWE called me. I’m d*ad serious, that’s when WWE called me, I lost everything. Alright, so after that whole Eagles thing, that whole debacle I go back to the school system, and then I finally, I go to a tryout with WWE.

The rising star also detailed their interactions, reminiscing how WWE told him they would try to bring back him if he learned how to wrestle, knowing that he hadn’t wrestled before in his life.

Trick WIlliams has created magic in the ring since he stepped onto it, winning the WWE United States Championship after multiple successes in the Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge in 2023 and NXT Championships.

He’s also the first-ever WWE-contracted wrestler to win the Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Championship, which he did in 2025 when he defeated Joe Hendry by pinfall.

As a rising rookie, Trick Williams has quickly become one of WWE’s most compelling crossover figures and now he may be bringing a major music star along with him. Speaking on Stephanie McMahon’s podcast What’s Your Story?, the WWE United States Champion revealed that Lil Yachty may be looking for more than just appearances at the events.

The two have built a close relationship, frequently discussing wrestling and performance, with Williams highlighting their shared drive to create something that feels authentic to fans.

He said he wants to have a match. Yachty said he wants a match. He’s gonna get in shape and we’re gonna do this. Let’s make it happen.

The revelation comes after WrestleMania 42, which featured several celebrity crossovers, including Jelly Roll and Pat McAfee, both of whom have already competed inside the ring. Travis Scott was one of the names that popped up in last year’s John CenaCody Rhodes storyline, but it didn’t materialize.

However, Williams’ comments suggest Yachty’s intentions may be more concrete. Williams shared that Yachty was committed to earning his place the traditional way: training, traveling, and immersing himself in the wrestling grind rather than taking shortcuts.

I ain’t wanna take no shortcuts. I ain’t wanna go straight to the top. I want to go to Delaware, I wanna go to Baton Rouge.’ He said, ‘I want to be one of the boys.

If this happens, there’s no question that this would strengthen WWE’s growing strategy of blending mainstream entertainment with in-ring storytelling.
