After that, he won four consecutive fights and defeated Demian Maia and the former UFC Welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley. Riding these wins he challenged his former teammate and UFC Welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman at UFC 258.

He challenged Tyron Woodley for his UFC Welterweight title at UFC 205, both of them tore each other apart for five rounds and this fight ended as a majority draw. The duo faced each other in a rematch at UFC 209 but this time Woodley won the fight by unanimous decision of the judges.
