UFC’s “Wonderboy”, Stephen Thompson reveals his most devastating moment from UFC 264
Stephen Thompson at UFC 264
Things definitely didn’t go Stephen Thompson’s way at the UFC 264 co-main event fight. But things had already gone south for the Wonderboy days before the fight.
Recently, UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson took on former title challenger Gilbert Burns in the co-main event of UFC 264. That fight saw Thompson lose via a unanimous decision to the Brazilian. Recently, on his YouTube channel, Wonderboy revealed his most embarrassing moment from the event and no it wasn’t losing to Burns apparently.
According to Thompson, this all happened during the ceremonial weigh-ins at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. We all know how devastating weight cuts can be and surely enough the welterweight had gone through his share of grief during the weigh-ins. Dehydrating for weight cut is the toughest part according to most fighters but for Thompson it was rehydrating. “While you’re there, we have food and I’ve got like five shakes that I have to drink, along with some water,” Thompson said.
“Now I’m depleted of pretty much everything at this point, and these shakes have a ton of sodium, sugars, vitamins, minerals, potassium — it’s got everything you can think of in a shake, so it’s rough on the body if you chug it, right? I’m sitting there with my dad with a bunch of fighters around me and people are coming over to try and talk to me, and I already drank my first drink along with like two water bottles,” Thompson said. “And then I started getting — something started to happen to me.”
“I projectile vomit everywhere,” says Stephen Thompson
Stephen knew he was going to go all out and couldn’t hold it in anymore so he caught the attention of his father to get a trash can so he could throw up. “Dad runs over there and pushes some UFC fighters away to try and get this thing to me — and he doesn’t get it to me,” Thompson said. “I projectile vomit everywhere. In front of the entire UFC roster. In front of everybody.”
Things became very awkward as Thompson was signing autographs for undercard fighters who were there for the weight cut too. Luckily they all knew what was happening and made the welterweight feel better. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh, welcome to the club, man.’ I guess that’s happened to a lot of people. I guess because when you drink it too fast, you just projectile vomit. That’s its thing,” ended Thompson.
