“This is marketing 101,” Chael Sonnen analyses Sean O’Malley’s intriguing star power without the rankings
Sean O'Malley- Chael Sonnen
UFC Bantamweight Sean O’Malley and former UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt had some heat for each other at the pre-fight press conference despite different opponents at UFC 269, and man they caught more attention than their own fights. This included MMA legend Chael Sonnen who commentated his thoughts upon the confrontation between both the fighters on his Youtube channel.
Regardless, O’Malley and Garbrandt cannot look past their fights as the former is fighting a well rounded mixed martial arts in Raulian Paiva and the latter is going to face Kiwi training centre City Kickboxing’s elite fighter in Kai Kara France. Both the fights are expected to be bangers from the fans’ perspective.
Chael Sonnen praises Sean O’Malley on impressive branding and fighting career
In his video, Chael Sonnen talked about both the fighters beginning with Cody Garbrandt on how the latter’s fighting style is attributed to Garbrandt’s aggressiveness that tends to return fire immediately. But for the most part, Sonnen was highly impressed by how Sean O’Malley’s career is being mapped out and what does he do to be on top of being famous despite fighting unranked opponents.
“[Eventuall] Sean [O’Malley] is going to get a ranking, he’s going to have to fight ranked guys and he’s going to work his way up and be treated the same as everybody else… but for the short term and as long as we can get it, I want him to remain the unranked champion. I want him to remain the biggest star, I want him to remain on the top of the bill. I want him to work his way closer to co-main and main event status, and I want him to keep fighting unranked guys,” Sonnen said.
“I am looking to prove a bigger point here, I do know ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley,” Sonnen said later on. “I do know where he lives, I do know his wife and how many kids he has, I know what he likes to do in his free time, I know he is the undefeated, undisputed champion of the unranked,” he continued.
“I know all these things because he’s told me, he’s told us, he’s told you he’s not afraid to get out in front of it he realizes his appearance matters. When he’s doing a cameo at the event from the front row and all they’re going to do is throw the camera on him, he’s not going to punch anybody, he’s not going to say anything at all. All you’re going to have to do is look at him so have a cool look to see he gets these things, they’re small, they’re simple, this is low fruit hanging, this is marketing 101,” Sonnen concluded.
