UFC Welterweight Leon Edwards is now searching for a new opponent as Jorge Masvidal, his opponent for UFC 269 has backed out due to injury and he is left without an opponent with the event happening within less than a month.

Edwards was last seen in action at UFC 263 where he won over Nate Diaz via unanimous decision. Now, he was heading with his 9-fight winning streak to satisfy his bad blood against Jorge Masvidal in December, which was a result of a fist-fight altercation that took place back in 2019 at UFC London.

In his interview with ESPN Coresspondant Brett Okamoto, Leon Edwards began talking about his initial reaction to the cancellation of the Jorge Masvidal fight. “I just finished my wrestling session and my manager Tim told me he pulled out… I was like oh f**k alright, I kind of knew he was going to pull out you know, I had kind of a feeling you know. I honestly heard like news comeback and saying he’s looking a bit fat…a bit troubled… so I didn’t think he was training too honestly,” Edwards said.

He added, “To have this fight pull out, this one was I looking forward to… I just wanted to get out of the way, get it done and get the score settled, move on to my well-deserved title shot…what I’ve earned years ago you know what I’m like on a 10-fight winning streak…all these guys they’re winning one, losing the one you know… they’re not getting the momentum like I’m you know… so like I said I am looking forward to my well-deserved title-shot.”

“He’s a fraud,” Leon Edwards goes off on Jorge Masvidal for pulling out from their fight

This is what he had to say on Masvidal as well, “I always felt he was a fake, he’s a fraud. I knew this going into the fight that he’s fake. He had like a good year, year and a half… and that kind of propelled him. But apart from that, he’s nothing but a journeyman,” Leon’s call of ‘journeyman’ to Masvidal was originally given by Colby Covington.

So far, the UFC has not announced the official replacement for Masvidal, but many believe that it will be the rising prospect, Khamzat Chimaev. Edwards and Chimaev were supposed to face each other way back, but both of them got affected by the Coronavirus, and their fight had to be called off. Khamzat is coming off from an amazing performance against Li Jinglian, and he is more than willing to accept his challenge. Whether or not Edwards is ready to risk his spot against Chimaev still remains a mystery.
