Derrick Lewis protests the stoppage at UFC 277
UFC 277 featured the much anticipated heavyweight fight between Derrick Lewis and Sergei Pavlovich. Lewis being a fan favorite received an amazing response on his way to the octagon. The hype before the fight was humongous and everybody was expecting Lewis to bounce back from his last loss at UFC 271. However, it didn’t go the way the fighter would have expected.
As the fight started, both the fighters didn’t waste any time going at each other. It looked like both Pavlovich and Lewis were in a mood to get a quick knockout. As the fighters traded shots the arena blew up with cheers. The ‘ Black Beast ‘ who initiated the action missed a few of his shots and instead got hit by a few of Pavlovich’s shots.
The shots were heavy and they stumbled Lewis badly. The Russian took this opportunity and continued to drop some heavy shots one after another, many of them missed but few had direct contact. Lewis dropped to his knees but he wasn’t knocked out. While he was trying to stand up, the referee immediately took action and stopped the fight. Lewis was not at all happy with the stoppage as he tried to convince the referee that he wasn’t hurt badly. Many including the commentators also thought that it was an early stoppage and Lewis wasn’t given any time to recover.

The Lewis vs Pavlovich fight definitely had a controversial ending and the whole MMA community reacted to it. While some agreed to the decision the referee made, many believed that the stoppage was premature. Here are some of the fan reactions on twitter.
One fan tweeted that the stop was good as Lewis had no chance of getting up after taking those huge shots.
A Twitter user blamed the referee for not giving a chance to Lewis to recover and stopping the fight when there was no reason.
A fight fan wrote that the officials should be ashamed of themselves after that early stoppage.
Another user had a different opinion and explained the referee did the right job to stop the fight. As when Lewis fell on the ground it was an great opportunity for Pavlovich to get over him and do some unnecessary damage.
Another user hilariously shared a GIF of a crying man in order to share his disappointment with the referee’s stoppage.
