Aljamain Sterling pulls out from his fight against Petr Yan scheduled for UFC 267
Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling
UFC 267’s co-main event has been put on a halt in the works. UFC’s bantamweight champion Aljamain “Funky” Sterling has stepped out of his fight against fellow contender and preceding bantamweight champion Petr “No Mercy” Yan. The news was initially reported by MMA Fighting. UFC 267 is supposed to take place on Oct 30 at Etihad Arena with UFC champion Jan Blachowicz defending his light-heavyweight title against Glover Teixeira in the main event.
The much-anticipated reason for the backout is most certainly the career-threatening health issues Sterling has been suffering from on his back that began to initiate back from his high school wrestling days, proceeded with his neck disc being replaced with a titanium disc in a critical surgery. He was supposed to fight Petr Yan to avenge a controversial win from the former champion at UFC 259 where Sterling was illegally kneed on the face by Yan that caused a decision of victory in favor of Sterling, making him a disputed champion.
Petr Yan predicted that Aljamain Sterling would pull out from this fight
One of the expected reactions to the news was that of his opponent himself. It was earlier this September when Petr Yan said that Aljamain Sterling will pull out from the fight. For obvious reasons, “No Mercy” was not surprised by Sterling’s pulling out of the competition and therefore reminded us of who was the wizard to tell the future.
A potential fate of the division now is a proposal from the UFC to host an interim bantamweight title match, since T.J. Dillashaw has just come out of his surgery recovering from but also winning his last fight. His better half of that match-up, Cory Sandhagen is still a potential contender despite losing the Dillashaw fight. Nonetheless, we also have Sean O’ Malley calling for top-ranked guys tirelessly after beating up his last two opponents who were not highly ranked, one of them not ranked at all.
