Poirer (28-7) recently lost his title opportunity against champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 269. It was his second chance to win the lightweight title, the first against Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019. Before losing to Oliveira, Poirier defeated Conor McGregor twice in a row.

Diaz (20-13) is in a tight spot as he has lost thrice in his last four fights. Diaz’s last win was against Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 in 2019. In his last fight against Leon Edwards, the Stockholm native gave a very impressive performance and was even close to knocking Edwards out.

Cormier in an interview with Helen Yee Sports discussed his opinions regarding the fight between Diaz and Poirer. The UFC legend expressed that Diaz has been making moves and Poirer has shown interest in him. Both the fighters have started trash talking to each other so there is a huge chance of this fight happening. “A lot of times when there is smoke there’s some fire too,” said DC.

According to Cormier, both the fighters are suitable for the fight as both share similar name value, popularity, stardom and also prefer fighting in a standing position. DC explained that he won’t be surprised if the fight took place this year. “All the pieces are in place to make a fantastic fight,” said DC.
