Madeline Mae Holmberg was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, on October 26, 1996. Robert Anthony Holmberg, her father, was a professional linebacker in American football who spent eight seasons in the National Football League( NFL). She attended Pennsylvania State University, where she studied kinesiology and psychology. She also completed her master’s in nutritional sciences and is now a registered dietitian.
Maddie was named USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year in 2020. Before Penn State, she won 12 Westmoreland County championships and earned four varsity letters at Hempfield Area High School. She is a three-time first-team All-American and Big Ten Champion in the pentathlon and heptathlon. She was named an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Nickal grew up in Allen, Texas, while Maddie is from Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Their paths crossed at Penn State, where they met. The pair eventually married in December 2020 amid the scenic Pennsylvania highlands despite growing up more than 18 hours away from each other.
