Charles Oliveira willing to offer Conor McGregor a shot at the lightweight strap ‘for money’
Conor McGregor and Charles Oliveira
The UFC Lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira defended his title against the biggest threat of his career, the former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier at the main event of UFC 269. Poirier entered this fight as a betting favorite but Oliveira stamped his authority on the Lightweight throne with a third-round submission win against him.
After Charles Oliveira’s first title defense, many fellow Lightweight fighters called him out and the former UFC two-division champion and one of the biggest draws in the promotion, Conor McGregor is also one of them. Oliveira had a back and forth with McGregor on Twitter regarding this and talking about the same in his latest interview at MMA Fighting, Portuguese Podcast, Trocacao France, Charles Oliveira says,
“If I had the chance in the past to fight for the belt or fight Conor, everybody knows I’d fight for the belt, that already happened, I’m the champion now. The champion has a name and his name is Charles Oliveira, Charles ‘do Bronx.’ If I had the chance to fight Conor for money today, I would.”
“The belt is mine and continues being mine. We’ll continue building our legacy and making history.” This clearly indicated that the champ won’t even think choice about waiting for his next title defense a few more months and giving McGregor the opportunity to face him ahead of Justin Gaethje.
Charles Oliveira added, “Of course, no one’s a fool. ‘No, I’ll fight someone else because of the belt, leave Conor alone’ — who’s going to do that? Only a fool,” he said. If I had the opportunity to fight Conor, I would definitely fight Conor.”
“The belt is mine regardless. The division has to get by and wait a little bit. There’s nothing else to do. We have to think about our families, our children, think about what we can do down the line.” {H/t MMA Fighting}
Charles Oliveira claims other ranked fighters claiming about McGregor leapfrogging them will change nothing
Conor McGregor is ranked number 9th in the Lightweight division rankings right now and he last won a fight in the Lightweight division back in 2016. Charles Oliveira also had a career filled with ups and downs and he was ranked number 7th in the division before he fought for the title.
But he believes other contenders complaining about McGregor leapfrogging him is not going to change anything. ‘Do Bronx’ added, “That happened to me, I was the No. 7 in the rankings and wanted to fight top contenders and they didn’t want to.”
“The champion has a name now, we’re part of the same organization, and I’ll fight whoever the UFC puts against me. If they say it’s Conor, I’ll fight him. If they say it’s Justin, I’ll fight him. I just want to go home now and get some rest with my daughter and go back to the cage as soon as possible.” {H/t MMA Fighting}
