“This belt does not belong to me, it belongs to Fernand Lopez and my team” – Ciryl Gane credits everyone at MMA Factory for his UFC 265 win over Derrick Lewis
Ciryl Gane and coach Fernand Lopez
Ciryl Gane earned a stunning TKO win over Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC 265. The fight took place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, and the heavyweights clashed for the interim heavyweight title. After gassing out Lewis, making him move frequently around the Octagon, Gane finished him in the third round with a flurry of punches to clinch the interim heavyweight belt.
In doing so, Ciryl Gane also became the first man from France to win a UFC title. Following his win, Gane took to Instagram to dedicate the victory to his coach Fernand Lopez. He credited Lopez for everything he had done in the last three years, right from identifying his talent to help him reach his goal.
“See you all soon for the next Chapter” – Ciryl Gane
Gane’s Instagram post read, “This belt doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to my team. When I started MMA three years ago, it was because @lopez_fernand had seen something in me. He knew that I could do something in the sport. So he did everything he could to help me reach that goal, and now here we are. The road is far from over, but he and my team at @mma_factory_paris already changed my life forever. See you all soon for the next Chapter.”
‘Bon Gamin’ will be taking on Francis Ngannou next for the heavyweight title. The venue and the date for the fight are yet to be announced. Gane and Ngannou have a history of being sparring partners for quite a while, until Ngannou left MMA Factory in Paris. There are several footages of the two sparring together.
It is worth noting that coach Fernand Lopez and Ngannou split only recently. Lopez accused Ngannou of developing an over-the-top ego that he could not put up with. Lopez told in an interview back in October 2020 – ““(To Ngannou) Listen, I really think one hundred percent that you have an ego problem. If you don’t like it, no problem, we cannot work together anymore.”“
Lopez might be out to prove that his current protege, Ciryl Gane, who is one of the best technical heavyweights in the world, is better than Ngannou.
