Sean O’Malley had his fight against Louis Smolka cancelled after Smolka withdrew from the fight due to an undisclosed injury. The fight was supposed to kick off the stacked main card of UFC 264 on the 10th of July, in Las Vegas. However, the UFC mentioned that they were still trying to keep O’Malley in the card.

A boatload of fighters stepped in and threw their names in the mix. One among them was Cody Stamann. The number 14 ranked bantamweight spoke to MMA Junkie in an interview and claimed that he was “super jealous and envious” of the push Sean O’Malley has got in the UFC. Stamman also expressed his desire to take on Sugar Sean.

“I haven’t exactly had the easiest run in the UFC” – Cody Stamann

Stamann was quoted as saying, “I haven’t exactly had the easiest run in the UFC, and I’m super jealous and envious of the run he’s had. I haven’t gotten those fights. I haven’t gotten those fights where you get guys on a skid, or you get a name on his way out. I’ve just gotten anybody that wins fights, six fights in a row, I’m like the gatekeeper in the rankings, like I gotta go fight that guy.“[via MMA Junkie]

He then continued, saying, “If a guy goes on a huge streak and he wins a bunch and he’s the next big thing, that’s the guy I have to fight. I’ve been an underdog in almost all my UFC matchups, probably more so than anybody else in the bantamweight division, and sometimes I can pull it off.” [via MMA Junkie]

Stamann is currently on a two-fight skid. He will be looking forward to getting back to winning ways, and hence has seen a fight against O’Malley as his best shot.

O’Malley on the other hand, is coming off a knockout victory over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260. He had previously lost to Marlon Vera at UFC 252, which was his first-ever loss in his career. He had previously won 4 fights in a row in the promotion.

Stamann is ranked number 14, whereas a win for O’Malley would propel him into the top 15 of the bantamweight rankings. Do you think this fight makes sense?
