Colby Covington once made a daring and confrontational statement. He threatened to take matters into his own hands should UFC CEO Dana White try to put the championship belt around his waist. This was before his title fight against Kamaru Usman on December 14, 2019.

Covington is recognized for his extravagant and frequently contentious methods of promoting bouts. In an interview with Submission Radio before his title fight, Covington said this about Dana White:

I can tell you who’s not wrapping it around my waist, and that will not be Dana White. If he tries to wrap it around my waist, I’m gonna take the belt from him and slap him in the face with it.

Confrontations, public arguments, and insults have characterized Covington’s history with the UFC and Dana White. Covington has an outstanding record and is a highly skilled fighter. However, his relationship with the promotion has been turbulent, which led to the removal of his interim welterweight title earlier in 2019.

Covington claimed that the UFC CEO makes snap decisions based on business needs. A personal element of hostility has been added to the professional rivalry as he has been outspoken in his feelings of being treated unfairly and disrespectfully by the promotion.

Dana White reacted to Colby Covington’s statement about smacking him

Dana White didn’t take long to respond to Colby Covington’s “slap” threat. Covington made it clear that he would not allow Dana White to put the championship belt around his waist after he beats Kamaru Usman. He even went so far as to say he would take the belt from White and slap him in the face with it. Covington competed against Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 244.

Dana White is known for his no bullsh** attitude. When asked about Covington’s statement, White responded to the threat in a dismissive manner. This is what he had to say:

At the time Covington and White did not have a good relationship. However, Colby slowly changed his stance and started praising Dana White. Over time, their relationship became better and White awarded Colby the third title shot of his career for UFC 296.
