Daniel Cormier on Paulo Costa

Though Daniel Cormier wasn’t a fan of Paulo Costa at UFC Vegas 41, the MMA commentator believes the Brazilian was unfairly deducted with a point for his eye poke on Marvin Vettori.

Paulo Costa took on Marvin Vettori at UFC Vegas 41 in what should have been a middleweight matchup but later moved up to light heavyweight. The Brazilian made an absolute mess out of the weight cut but his opponent Vettori still agreed to fight him and even won the fight via unanimous decision. Costa, despite his loss put on a decent performance.

In the second round of the fight, Paulo mistakingly eye-poked the Italian, and referee Jason Herzog straight away deducted a point for the eye poke. Many fans and Costa himself believed that was unfair given it was only the first stoppage. Daniel Cormier on his fight review too believed Jason Herzog went over board with the point deduction. Cormier believes the referee was carried away with the emotions leading up to the fight.

“Now here’s the thing. The poke in the eye I get it. But when he got a point deducted I thought to myself that Jason Herzog has been watching the headlines. Jason Herzog has been paying attention to the story that’s going around this fight because everybody hates Costa. But when he took the point after one eye poke that really didn’t look intentional to me, it told me that Herzog has been following headlines and allowed for that emotion of Costa,” said DC on his YouTube video.

Daniel is no stranger to eye pokes as he was warned several times in his career for the eye pokes. “We have seen much more severe eye pokes happen in fights. I’ve done it myself. I’ve poked guys more than this guy poked Marvin Vettori and didn’t get any point taken away. As an official, you can’t read the headlines. I think, Herzog read the headlines and he may have judged Costa unfairly.”
