Demian Maia says he “would be honored to have his last fight against Nate Diaz”

Demian Maia and Nate Diaz

Demian Maia, one of the longest standing fighters in the UFC, who has been a part of the promotion since UFC 77 – October 2007, fought Belal Muhammad in the main card of UFC 263. The submission expert, considered to be one of the greatest grapplers in the history of the sport, fought hard, ultimately going down by unanimous decision.

In the very same card, in the first-ever five-round non-title fight, Nate Diaz fought Leon Edwards in another welterweight contest. Diaz put on a warrior’s performance, like he usually does, and almost turned the match in the last minute of the fifth round. However, Edwards won the fight via. unanimous decision.

“From one real person to another”- Demian Maia addresses Nate Diaz

With Maia 43 years old, he is in the Twilight phase of his career. He recently even revealed that he would fight one more time, after the Muhammad fight. And recently, on Twitter, Maia made a surprising callout. He expressed his desire to fight ‘The Stockton Slugger’ Nate Diaz before bowing out from the sport. He also had words of appreciation for the West Coast OG.

Maia tweeted, “I appreciate the respect and I would be honoured to have my last fight against someone I respect a lot @NateDiaz209 ,we may seem very different, but we are the same, cause we’re real. From one BJJ representative and one real person to another.Much respect.

At this stage, there is a very high possibility that this fight comes to fruition. Maia hasn’t lost his relevance in the rankings yet, he still is in the top 15. Provided Diaz accepts, although he has to recover for quite a long time, after all those hits he received against Leon Edwards, the fight might very well be on the cards.
