“He wasn’t going to fight five rounds with me”- Dustin Poirier harks back to his UFC 264 clash against Conor McGregor, says he was in full control

UFC Lightweight, Dustin Poirier talking about his third fight with McGregor
Dustin Poirier, former UFC interim lightweight champion, will be facing the UFC Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 for the title. As Dustin has seemingly earned this title shot after being ranked #1 in Division. Poirier has come a long way ever since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Poirier recently reviewed his trilogy fight with former UFC Lightweight and Featherweight champion Conor McGregor at UFC 264 and stated that if the Irishman did not have his leg get snapped, he would have beaten him anyway and broke his heart.
Dustin Poirier appeared in a video titled ‘Run It Back’ uploaded by UFC’s official YouTube channel and recalled when McGregor contradicted his own words before the fight.
“Submissions don’t count and he tried to submit me. The first one to shoot is a dusty b***h and he’s the one trying to take me down. A lot of stuff that we just let this guy continue to run his mouth. If his leg wouldn’t have broke, I’d have broken his heart. The fight was going bad for him, I was in full control. I saw that look in his eye of desperation, that I saw in Abu Dhabi. I was going to knock him out. He wasn’t going to fight for five rounds with me.”
Although the fight came to an abrupt halt, the judges had Poirier win the first round. The judges had scored the fight 10-9, 10-8 and 10-8 in favor of the #1 ranked Lightweight, who was dominant right from the opening bell.

As Poirier was talking about his rivalry with Conor, Dustin seemingly loved talking about their first fight as he claimed, “It’s sweet every time, a lot of times I don’t go back and watch the fights and replays, It kinda gets old to me but this one….forever is gonna be great to look at.”
This is unlike the time Conor lost to Nate Diaz, as Conor did not take this loss like a true warrior, but instead tried to reframe the old “Trash-talk” version of himself in the build-up to their third bout, which Poirier saw as insecurity and lost all his respect for Conor and his actions after their third fight was even more pitiful as the former champ was cursing and targeting Dustin’s wife.
Poirier is now set to have the biggest opportunity of his career as he will face the current UFC Lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira at UFC 269.
