Giga Chikadze and Alexander Volkanovski
The UFC Featherweight champion and number 4th ranked pound for pound fighter, Alexander Volkanovski defeated Brian Ortega in the main event of UFC 266 and defended his title the second time.
Volkanovski and Ortega tested each other to the limit for five rounds and in the end, the champion emerge victorious by the unanimous decision of the judges. The fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega was scheduled for UFC 258 earlier, but Ortega got affected by COVID and this fight got re-booked for UFC 266.
Now the champion intends to stay active and fight one more time this year. Volkanovski will probably face the winner of Max Holloway vs Yair Rodriguez next. That fight is booked for November, which means he will have to explore other options to fight this year.
In the post-fight press conference of UFC 266, Volkanovski admitted that he is ready to fight at Lightweight as well. He says, “That’s not until November, and I want to fight, So, do I move up, fight at lightweight, maybe fight the champion? Give me something, because I had 14 months off because of this whole lockdown.”
“I’m thinking of maybe coming over here [to the [U.S.] to ride out this lockdown thing, because it’s a mess. That’s why I said this fight is for everyone back home that are struggling, they’re going through tough times, New Zealand and Australia.”
Giga Chikadze is ready to fight Alexander Volkanovski
The number 8th ranked UFC Featherweight fighter, Giga Chikadze was in attendance at UFC 266. Chikadze is on a seven-fight win streak in the division and he is undefeated in UFC. He secured the latest win against the UFC veteran, Edson Barboza at UFC on ESPN: Barboza vs Chikadze.
Now, he is aiming to fight the top guns in the Featherweight division, and the champion, Alexander Volkanovski is also one of them. After Volkanovski’s win at UFC 266, Chikadze tweeted,
“Alexander Volkanovski Congrats champ great fight! I heard you dont wanna wait long and wanna fight this year again, this is what real champ does and I love it! November December January, call me anytime, I’m always ready.”
He has called out Max Holloway as well earlier and he further added, “It’s time for a title”. He has faced only one out of the top ten contenders in the Featherweight division and it is going to be interesting to see whether he’ll get a chance to face the champion anytime soon or not.
