In today’s opening fight of the preliminary card, Ukrainian fighter Maryna Moroz defeated Kazakh fighter Mariya Agapova by submission via arm-triangle choke. “The Iron Lady” had an emotionally draining fight not just because she fought Agapova, who was once a teammate but because her family and her country are facing invasion by the Russians.
It isn’t hard for anyone to see why the Ukrainian, who coached the Ukrainian Olympic Boxing team, has such strong fold love for her country. Right after her victory, a staggered Moroz took the microphone from UFC commentator, Joe Rogan and broke down while trying to talk about her family and her home.
“I have a lot of pressure. All this week I feel nervous, I cried. I tried to focus. Many people don’t know, but it was really hard for me. I see in Ukraine how terrible the situation is. It was really my heart almost crying. But I did it. I focused, and I did fight,” Moroz said in the post-fight news conference.
Moroz has won three fights straight after having moved up from strawweight to flyweight. However, due to some issues with her visa, this is her first fight since she won against Mayra Silva at UFC Fight Night 170: Brasilia.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February and ever since then the countries have been at war. This has led to the people of Ukraine trying to help in the war or raise awareness of the issue. Moroz has been continuously raising awareness through social media and has even been raising funds by selling merchandise. During her post-fight press conference, she opened up about the war and how it’s affected her personally. She talked about how she had to put her head down and focus so she could fight and win despite the ongoing war.
Even eminent fighters, like Vasyl Lomachenko, Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali, etc. have gotten off their pedestals to fight with their brothers by enlisting themselves in the Army.
