Charles Oliveira received a tremendous welcome at the T-Mobile arena before his upcoming UFC 300 bout against Arman Tsarukyan. The Brazilian is a fan favorite, and fans hope ‘Do Bronx’ will win the lightweight title eliminator. However, Chael Sonnen might have upsetting news about Oliveira and the difficult weight-cutting process.
Chael Sonnen recently sat down with Daniel Cormier on the Good Guy/Bad Guy show. During the conversation, Sonnen shared an inside scoop and mentioned that Oliveira’s team was concerned about the fighters’ weight cut. In the past, Charles Oliveira has struggled to make 155 pounds multiple times. According to Sonnen, this time, it is the same story.
Right now with team Oliveira. Their biggest concern is not Saturday, they got one opponent first and this opponent has beaten him before, several times and that is the scale. And right now they are getting some weight off and they are a little bit worried.Chael Sonnen via ESPN MMA
DC pitched into the conversation and shared about the Athletic Commission stripping Oliveira of the belt at UFC 274 against Justin Gaethje. Before that fight, ‘Do Bronx’ was the last one to the scale and fell short of hitting the 155 lbs mark by half a pound. Although Oliveira submitted Gaethje in the fight, he didn’t get his belt back.
The former champion has encountered weight-cut issues on several occasions throughout his career. In 2014, the fighter stepped down to fight in the featherweight division. In the span of ten fights, he missed the weight four times and could not reach the top of the division.
Sonnen stressed that even if Oliveira defeats Tsarukyan, Dana White won’t let him compete for the title if he doesn’t make the weight. UFC is very strict with its weight policies, something the fighter has first-hand experience in the past. Only time will tell if Oliveira makes weight for UFC 300.
The lion hunting – Charles Oliveira’s quest inside the octagon
As many concerns about his weight-cutting exist, Charles Oliveira looked in top form in the press conference. The Brazilian appeared extremely sharp and ready to go. With the fight having title eliminator stakes, it remains a must-win battle for ‘Do Bronx.’
During the UFC 300 presser, Oliveira talked about being in the fight game for a long time and knowing all the facades that go into promoting fights. One could say he indirectly addressed the trash talks of Tsarukyan.
Some people sell the fight in a different way, some people are gonna say things and it doesn’t matter. I sell the fight in just one way, when that door closes, I’m a lion hunting. That’s what I do.Charles Oliveira via UFC 300 pre-fight press conference
Oliveira emphasized that his strategy will focus on giving exciting performances as he has always done in the past. According to the fighter, it’s better than depending on flashy, outside-the-cage trash talk. Fight fans are hyped about the fight and want the fighter to get into the octagon without any weight complications. A win over Tsarukyan would elevate ‘Do Bronx’ into the title picture once again.
