UFC commentator Joe Rogan has a respectable reputation for his knowledge and experience in martial arts. Some people don’t understand that Rogan is not a pushover. He has tremendous combat sports experience in Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In a recent podcast episode, a guest mentioned the story of how people underestimate Rogan’s combat abilities.
Joe Rogan hosted John Hennessey, the CEO of Hennessey Performance Engineering, on his podcast. Rogan and John talked about different topics like automotive, fighting, and their private life. While discussing their private life, Hennessey mentioned the time when Rogan invited a couple of guys to the gym after they tried to extract money from him.
Rogan went into detail about the incident. He said, “While I am walking on the street and these two guys start f*cking with me, and I’m not rattled at all. They just kept saying that I needed to give them money.” Rogan told them about teaching martial arts classes at the Jae Hun Kim Taekwondo Institute.
Rogan invited them, asking, “You want to come up and watch? I’ll f*cking kill you, man. Leave me alone, don’t make me kill you.” When he revealed he was a black belt in Taekwondo, the street thugs left, not wanting to escalate the situation. Rogan is an accomplished Taekwondo specialist and can easily defeat amateur fighters.
Joe Rogan reveals UFC’s reaction to the 9/11 tragedy
Joe Rogan has played an important role in the development of the UFC. He has always advocated for the sport of MMA against all odds. Rogan talked about how the UFC handled the 9/11 tragedy to John Hennessey on his podcast.
He said, “The UFC got purchased by Zuffa- that was in 2001. And I went to one of their first events. Vladimir Matyushenko fought Tito Ortiz, and it was right after September 11. And Tito Ortiz is walking into the octagon with an American flag, and the place goes wild, just wild because it was right after September 11. It was like, ‘holy sh*t.’”
This would have been a successful walkout any other day, but America was especially sensitive after the 9/11 disaster. Rogan continued, “And during that fight, the pay-per-view went out, and the people didn’t get to see the last rounds of the main event. It was a huge disaster.” Rogan revealed that the event was unsuccessful because of the stunt pulled by Ortiz, and the UFC dealt with financial losses.
