“I don’t like being coach of the year,” Khabib Nurmagomedov talks about being undefeated as a coach

Khabib Nurmagomedov as coach

UFC’s former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is yet to lose in a professional MMA fight. Be it fighting or coaching from the sideline, Khabib has been undefeated in his career. While many are shouting out the Dagestani for “Coach of the Year”, Nurmagomedov has his own take.

Khabib Nurmagomedov retired in 2020 after beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. The fighter was undefeated in his career with a clean record of 29-0. After asserting that he would not fight again ever in the octagon, Khabib has gone on to support his teammates to pursue their goals in fighting. The likes of Islam Makhachev, Umar Nurmagomedov have succeeded in the octagon with Khabib as their cornerman.

In 2021, Khabib cornered/coached four fighters and all four came home with wins. With UFC 267 inching closer, Khabib will be on the sidelines for three of his teammates. Many people in the MMA world have called Nurmagomedov the best coach of the year but Khabib refuses to take that compliment. In the recent episode of DC & RC, Khabib made an appearance talking about his coaching career.

“Like the coach of the year, honestly, I don’t like this. Because I have name, I have high (attention) everybody is calling me the coach of the year. But we have a coach. His name is Javier Mendez. And in his gym, since 2010-2020 every year he had someone was champion. 2011, 2013, 2017, any year, last ten years he has someone as champion,” praised Khabib.

“AKA, American Kickboxing Academy. And with this team, with us, all the time traveling and training with us. He stays with us. In my opinion, Javier Mendez is the coach of the year, not Khabib Nurmagomedov. I need 30 more years to become like him, like an experienced coach. Right now, I just finished my career and started cornering my guys.”
