Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards

Leon Edwards asserted his claim as a top-ranked welterweight contender by beating Nate Diaz via. unanimous decision at the recently concluded UFC 263. The fight went the full-five rounds, and except for the last minute of the fight, Edwards was in his element. Had he not been rocked by Diaz in the last minute, it would have been one of the most dominating performances in a while.

Following the win, Leon Edwards expressed his desire to take on Kamaru Usman, in a title fight. And more recently, Edwards spoke to John Gooden of UFC, and strongly put forward his claim that he wanted the title shot next. ‘Rocky’ clarified that he would patiently for the opportunity.

The Brit also fired shots at fellow welterweight Jorge Masvidal for recently expressing his desire to fight him, after having turned him down while he (Edwards) wasn’t in the spotlight.

“I’ve been asking to fight Jorge Masvidal f*cking two or three years ago” – Leon Edwardss

Edwards was quoted as saying, “Let’s say they do give Colby the title shot, I’m not fighting no one else unless it’s a title shot. That’s just it. I’m not gonna start fighting 10, 11, 12 fights and still ain’t got a title shot. I’ve earned my way. I didn’t b*tch and moan when I took my loss against Kamaru. I worked my way back up to now have a 9, 10-fight win streak. I feel like I deserve it.” [via MMA Fighting]

He continued, “I know they’re talking about Masvidal but I’ve been asking to fight Masvidal f*cking two or three years ago. Like, running him down but he kept turning me down and saying ‘Nah, I don’t want to fight,’ even though the UFC wanted it. Now I feel he’s just been chinned for the world title, I don’t feel I need to do that now. I’ll wait for my title shot. I worked hard to get here and that’s just more time to plan.” [via MMA Fighting]

Masvidal is coming off a brutal knockout loss against Kamaru Usman at UFC 261, wherein he challenged for the welterweight title. It was Gamebred’s first-ever knockout loss in his UFC career.

Leon Edwards fires back at Jorge Masvidal

Masvidal had recently taken a dig at Edwards’ fighting abilities following his performance at UFC 263. Gamebred (in an interview with THEMACLIFE) claimed that Edwards lacked the killer instinct, which was the reason why he was always overlooked in the promotion.

Edwards replied with a tweet, “That boy awake? The last time he said that he got put to sleep,” taking a dig at Masvidal’s performance at UFC 261.
