‘Jon Jones is my boy…I have no ill will toward him’ – Malki Kawa clears the air on his relationship with Jon Jones

Jon Jones and Malki Kawa

Jon Jones recently parted ways with his management team First Round Management headed by Malki Kawa and his brother Abe Kawa. He was represented by the team for more than 10 years, even before his time as the light-heavyweight champion. The motive of the split was because both the parties needed something fresh, and not anything else.

However, rumours were rife that all was not well between Jones and the Kawa brothers. In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Malki Kawa clarified that all was good between him and Jon Jones. He claimed that he would even call up Jones whenever he wanted to, indicating that he was that close with the light-heavyweight GOAT. Kawa also stated that Jones was in safe hands with Richard Schaefer (Jones’ new advisor).

The Jones split was what it was‘ – Malki Kawa

Malki Kawa was quoted as saying, “The Jones split was what it was. I made terms with it years ago. He’s my boy. If he called me tomorrow, I’ll still answer the phone. I have no ill will toward him, nothing like that. It just is what it is. Eleven years, we were with him – it’s a long time. Sometimes you just need something fresh, and if Richard Schaefer can get it done, I’ll be the happiest one for him. But we represent Derrick Lewis.” [via MMA Junkie]

Jones has been struggling to land a fight since his move to the heavyweight division almost a year back. The light-heavyweight GOAT renounced his title in August 2020, in a bid to seek bigger challenges. However, a payment dispute with UFC President Dana White has stalled the progress of his heavyweight future.

He was supposed to face newly-crowned heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, but now the opportunity has gone to Derrick Lewis who will be facing the Cameroonian instead. Jones will be looking forward to making a statement with his new advisor Richard Schaefer.
