The fight certainly had the potential to be one of the best fights of the year. Max Holloway is currently on a two-fight win streak. His last two losses came against the champion Alexander Volkanovski.

Holloway lost against the former featherweight champion Volkanovski in a unanimous decision in Dec 2019. Soon after, Volkanovski again defeated Holloway to defend his title via split decision in a rematch in July 2020.

Now that Holloway is out of the fight. Yair Rodriguez might get the benefit of this opportunity. Yair ranks 3rd in the UFC revised rankings and for his good, Alex has beaten the second-ranked fighter Brian Ortega at UFC 266.

Yair has won two of his last four fights and has lost only one against Max Holloway. So, giving him the opportunity when Max is out, makes a lot of sense. However, a possibility of a rematch between Alexander and Ortega also exists so it is certainly on the UFC management who will get the title shot. Another possible contender is the former two-division champ, Henry Cejudo. He’s been wanting to fight that champ ever since he retired, and this looks like a great opportunity.
