Michael Chiesa on Kamaru Usman

The welterweight champion Kamaru Usman called out Michael Chiesa for a fight at UFC 263, but Chiesa knew this fight was never going to happen, and it was nothing more than a negotiating tactic from Usman’s management team.

Chiesa recently opened up about this on What the heck, he said he realized that this fight wasn’t going to take place, but he enjoyed all the exposure he got from it, “To you guys, I was like, ‘I welcome that fight, great,’” Chiesa said. “Why do you think I didn’t prod back at him? I knew who it was going to be. … I wasn’t upset about it. This isn’t the first time it happened.”

Chiesa talked about the conversation he had with his manager, he stated “He called me and he was like, ‘Hey, how good a shape are you in right now? ’I said, ‘I’m training. I only took three days off when I got home from Fight Island.’ He’s like, ‘Do you want to fight Kamaru April 24?’ I was like, ‘Shoot, I’m not going to say no. But yeah, let me know.’”

“I’m kind of going nuts here,” he said. “I know what I need to do right now. I’m trying to get prepared for the biggest moment of my life if it’s coming up on this short a notice. Chiesa said while he was thinking about all this, he realized that it was nothing but a negotiation tactic from Usman’s team, he added, “I know how this business works. I’d like to think I’m pretty savvy to this kind of stuff.”

Chiesa is booked to face Vicente Luque at UFC 265, and Chiesa thinks it will be his toughest test to this date, and this is the fight he needs to win if he wants his shot at the title, “This is the fight I need to get to the next level,” Chiesa said. “This is a test I need to pass before I get to that next level. If I can get a win, whether it be by finish or by decision, whatever the result is, I’m going to have to walk through the fire to get it.”

“I want to fight for the title. If I go out there and have a dominant performance, I don’t see how I can’t stake my claim with a five-fight winning streak, and being the freshly minted No. 5 guy. Why not me? But I’m not looking too far ahead. I’m deadlocked focused on Vicente Luque.”
